Enjoy a relaxing start to your holiday with the morning free to explore our tropical city. In the afternoon join our Darwin City Explorer tour, visiting Cullen Bay, East Point Military Precinct and Charles Darwin National Park. There's also time to explore the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. See how Darwin has grown over the years.
Monday
We depart your Darwin accommodation around 0700 and travel to Litchfield
National Park. Visit the beautiful Florence Falls and Wangi Falls, both cascading from the Tabletop Ranges. Perhaps
enjoy a swim in the plunge pools at the base of the falls or explore the
surrounding monsoon rainforest. In the afternoon we travel via the small township of Batchelor to return to your Darwin accommodation.
Tuesday
Approximately 220km east of Darwin lies one of Australia's best known treasures, Kakadu National Park. Leaving Darwin, we travel the Arnhem Highway across the Adelaide River and Marrakai Plains. A wide variety of native wildlife has made this region their home. Stop at Nourlangie Rock where your Driver/Guide will lead a walk to view ancient Aboriginal rock art. After lunch (available for purchase), we join our local guide for a cruise on the famous Yellow Water Billabong. Search for saltwater crocodiles and colourful birdlife on these lily-covered wetlands. Finally visit the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre and view the informative displays depicting the traditions of the Aboriginal people in Kakadu, before returning to Darwin.
Wednesday
Join The Ghan for the only North-South Transcontinental Train journey in the world. Pausing in Katherine, you have the opportunity to cruise through Nitmiluk National Park. Continue mid-afternoon to Alice Springs.
Thursday
Arrive in Alice Springs mid-morning. Tour the sights of 'The Alice', including the historic Telegraph Station and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Learn how this marvellous facility operates to provide a 'Mantle of Safety' to the people of the outback. We visit the School of the Air, where sometimes we are able to listen to the children take lessons on air, as well as the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, where you will see native Central Australian reptiles such as the Perentie lizard and Thorny Devil. We also take in a panoramic view of Alice Springs from Anzac Hill. Three nights accommodation in Alice Springs at Lasseters Hotel Casino.
Friday
Free day in Alice Springs, or perhaps join a day tour to Ayers Rock and the Olgas ($210pp).
Saturday
Enjoy a free morning exploring this outback town prior to an afternoon experiencing the West MacDonnell Ranges, which cut right through The Alice.
Sunday
Rejoin The Ghan for the overnight journey to Adelaide.
Monday
After your 3100km train journey, make your own way to Adelaide airport for your afternoon flight home (15 minutes by taxi or shuttle bus).
